More Than an Author Visit: A Whole-School Impact Day

If you work with students aged 8 to 18 and want to help them feel confident, proud of their heritage, and curious about cultural differences, this author visit is designed for you.

Created by author, educator, and speaker Yoshito Darmon-Shimamori, these visits are designed to empower the whole school community - students, teachers, and parents - and to create an impact that lasts long after the visit.

Schools receive engaging presentations on the themes of Multilingual Superpowers and Intercultural Communication, practical workshops for teachers and parents, and ready-to-use fun teaching material that help continue the message in the classroom and at home. Schools also benefit from discounts on all of the author's books.

Two author visit themes

Author Visit 1: Multilingual Superpowers

This visit helps multilingual students see their languages as a strength rather than something to hide. Through stories, real-life examples and interactive activities, students discover how speaking more than one language can become a real superpower.

This visit is especially suitable for schools with multilingual and EAL students.

Schools choose this visit because it:

  • busts myths about multilingualism

  • builds confidence in multilingual students

  • encourages children to speak and value their home language

  • helps students feel proud of their identity

  • creates a positive atmosphere around languages in the whole school

Author Visit 2: Intercultural Communication

We live in a world where we increasingly study and work with people from different cultural backgrounds. Schools reflect this reality more and more every year. While this diversity is incredibly enriching, it can sometimes lead to misunderstandings between students - and even between students and teachers.

This visit helps students understand how cultural differences influence the way we think, communicate and interact with others. Through engaging activities and relatable examples, students learn how to communicate respectfully and how to recognise when a behaviour may be rooted in a different culture rather than being intentional.

This visit is ideal for schools that want to educate globally minded students and prepare them to communicate confidently in an increasingly multicultural world.

Schools choose this visit because it:

  • helps students understand cultural differences in a positive and practical way

  • develops empathy and respect between students

  • supports PSHEE and identity-focused learning

  • prepares students for multicultural classrooms and future workplaces

  • encourages confident and respectful communication

Suitable for children aged 8 to 18 (the presentation is adapted to different age groups)

What is included in the author visit package?

Every author visit is designed to create an impact that lasts well beyond the day itself. In addition to an engaging student presentation, each visit includes workshops for parents and teachers, because lasting change happens when the adults supporting the students are involved too.

Schools also receive pre- and post-visit materials for both teachers and parents, helping them reinforce the empowering message shared during the presentation and continue supporting students afterwards.

Workshops for teachers and parents

Pre- and Post-visit materials

Pre- and post-visit materials are included in both author visit packages to help all students benefit fully from the experience.

The pre-visit worksheets introduce key ideas and vocabulary from the presentation, which is particularly helpful for EAL students. This allows them to understand the session more easily and take part more confidently.

The post-visit materials help schools continue the discussion after the visit, so students can reflect on the message and remember it long after the event.

Pre-visit material:

  • Powerpoint for teachers

  • Worksheet for students

Post-visit material

A Student Guide to Thriving in a Multicu
  • A digital guide

  • Three fun stand-alone lessons to explore multilingualism and multiculturalism OR intercultural communication (depending on the package)
